Captain Kirk’s Cream Ale is Tustin Brewing Company’s (TBC) adaptation of the second place winner in the Light Hybrid category from this year’s OC Fair.
This satisfying brew is the brainchild of Kirk Holt, a homebrewer and best friend of TBC’s Head Brewer, Jerrod Larsen. In fact, it is Kirk who taught Larsen how to homebrew. Larson become so enthralled by Holt’s knowledge and teachings, Larson invested a few thousand dollars of brewing equipment in only 6 months.
After a few years of homebrewing, Larsen eventually took a position as TBC’s brewing apprentice and has since become TBC’s Head Brewer.
The roles are somewhat reversed now as Kirk joins Jerrod as the assistant brewer for the day from time to time. Furthermore, Kirk and Jerrod continue homebewing together and a couple batches eventually served as pilots for a TBC special brew, most notably our ever popular Stay All Day Session IPA.
Pale-gold and brilliant in appearance, Captain Kirk’s Cream Ale releases light malt character on the nose supported by some soft esters. On the palate, bready pilsner malt shines through upfront displaying pleasant cereal flavors, a semi-sweet core, and a delightfully dry finish. This medium-light bodied beer is proper enough for a second pour.
Kirk’s close friends also refer to him simply as “Captain.” Naturally, we named our version of Kirk’s award wining Cream Ale after his moniker. Cheers, Captain Kirk!
