The Angry Monk doesn’t really t into a specic beer category or meet specic style guidelies. Therefore, it is what it is - which is to say that it displays a very Belgian character due to the yeast strain. The aroma is heavy on the caramalized banana side, with a dash of licorice. One distinguishing characteristic of this particular yeast strain is that it is highly floccuating, which means that it leaves the beer very clear and bright without sacrificing any favors. The name Angry Monk did not exactly come from some quirky thought like a lot of names originate. I first brewed this beer in
1996 and labeled it as a “Trappist-style Ale.” Within a month, I received a Cease and Desist letter from a law rm representing the best interests of Belgium’s Trappist Monks - the same
Trappist Monks responsible for brewing Westmalle, Chimay, Rochefort, Orval, and Westvleteren - MY HEROES! In the letter they pointed out, not so gently, that I was not a Trappist Monk and therefore incapable of brewing a Trappist ale. I was crushed! They were right, I was wrong, and the name was changed.
