ACLU Presents Tangerine

An ACLU documentary short will precede TANGERINE, followed by a discussion (panelists TBA).
A breakout hit at Sundance in 2015, director Sean Baker and co-writer Chris Bergoch met their two transgender leads near the Donut Time in the LA neighborhood where TANGERINE is set and collaborated with them and other transgender sex workers to create the movie’s richly detailed, trash-talking characters and for its technical innovation; the film was shot entirely on several iPhone 5S cameras (with a prototype adapter lens).
About the short:
An intimate portrait of Kimberly and Kai Shappley: a mother rejecting her community’s beliefs as her transgender daughter navigates life at school, where she’s been banned from the girls’ bathroom.
Director Daresha Kyi (Chavela), currently a Firelight Media Documentary Lab fellow, writes and directs film and television in Spanish and English, and has produced television for FX, WE, AMC, Telemundo, and others.
Produced by the ACLU and Little by Little Films. This short is one of a series of three character-led films about transgender civil rights directed by LGBTQ+ filmmakers, produced by an inclusive and majority-LGBTQ+ production teams, and informed by a panel of transgender advisors.
