Monkey Paw 5th Anniversary Luncheon

It was Veterans Day 11.11.11 that Derek Freese and I brewed the very first batches of beer at Monkey Paw. Since that time it has always been important for Monkey Paw to make beer personal and this is why we have made cutting edge beers, fun and innovative beers, a plethora of collaborations with small and large breweries and continue to pay homage to traditional styles and techniques. At the same time in an ever changing market of “hype to fleece” beer it remains as critical today as ever for us to be a leader in support of conscious capitalism in our industry. So after a discussion with our Head Brewer Cosimo Sorrentino we agreed months ago we will be releasing our first ever bottles for our 5th Anniversary. Packaging beer is not new to our tiny 10bbl brewhouse because we were the first native San Diego brewing company to can beers in 2012. We acquired a wild goose canning line and ended up selling the line to Ballast Point who beta tested their first Sculpin cans with it and the rest of that billion dollar story is history!

We are bringing in Mobile Bottling Source and packaging up 2 beers: Thank You! 5th Anniversary Ale (Double IPA) and Santa’s Pet Monkey Holiday Ale. We have been wanting to package again in can (which we are working on as well) and bottles for limited releases for the past year and we hope after this run to start packaging 2 unique seasonal flavors each quarter. Kick ass artist and friend Nicholas Fullmer has designed our labels for our first 22oz bottle releases and he did a great job and we hope to continue this relationship for each of our quarterly releases. As for “Thank You!” and “SPM “both of these will be available our Anniversary weekend event (11/19/2016) at the brewery for fair and equitable purchase. Fair and Equitable? Yes, “THANK YOU!” will be sold basically “at cost” to the fans of Monkey Paw in celebration of their support thru all the fuzzy white noise of these last 5 years. Say What? Yep you heard it. $4 bottles of the best DIPA we can make chalked and topped off with hops upon hops upon hops upon flavor. Expensive for us to make? Damn right. Inexpensive for our fans for this special occasion? You better f*ckin believe it!

I know that me speaking out against all the inequities that come along with all the newfound greed and common place marketing ploys of this era can make me a polarizing and misunderstood person but let NOONE ever say that I don’t care or that I don’t put my money where my mouth is. It’s time to pay it forward and RETURN that investment to the great beer lovers! There is no such thing as an equitable 17 dollar bottle of non-barrel aged beer. So we decided to hit the rewind and bring back that wonderful return on investment (ROI) that made craft beer so damn enjoyable. So THANK YOU! for sticking with us and loving us, we love our fans!

As a footnote we will also be releasing our annual Holiday ale Santa’s Pet Monkey in 22oz! This year we are releasing a S’mores version of this decadent Strong Stout that will be just perfect for the holidays. Prepare yourselves though because this is going to be a whole lot pricier than “Thank You!” I mean this is going to cost our fans $6.50 a bottle at the release!
