Sat/Sun Mar 24/25 - Orval Day / Trappist Ale Celebration

March 24, 2018 12:00PM - 8:00PM at Carolina Beer Temple

The Orval legend began almost 1,000 years ago, when a princess accidentally dropped her ring into a spring and a trout returned it. It continues now, with a day to reflect on and enjoy this amazing Trappist ale.

While Orval Day is Saturday, March 24th, the Carolina Beer Temple will be holding a weekend-long celebration! Please join us Saturday, March 24th and Sunday March 25th as we will be featuring bottle pours of Orval and holding a Trappist Ale celebration featuring 4 Trappist Ales on tap: La Trappe Trappist's Quadrupel & Dubbel plus Chimay's White (Tripel) & Blue (strong dark ale).

Orval was the first Brett beer to land on US shores. ( "Brett" - brettanomyces - is a yeast variety that adds appetizing, sharp acidity and dryness.) Orval sells one beer, within the walls of Notre Dame d’Orval Monastery in Belgium.

There are 12 Trappist breweries in the world (6 in Belgium). The criteria to be Trappist:
- The beer must be brewed within the walls of a Trappist monastery, either by the monks themselves or under their supervision.
- The brewery must be of secondary importance within the monastery and it should witness to the business practices proper to a monastic way of life
- The brewery is not intended to be a profit-making venture. The income covers the living expenses of the monks and the maintenance of the buildings and grounds. Whatever remains is donated to charity for social work and to help persons in need.

We hope to see you the weekend of March 24th/25th!
