Screening as part of our month-long FLORIDA BAD film series!
BLOOD FEAST was, like pioneering gore filmmaker Herschell Gordon Lewis and producer/kindred spirit David F. Friedman's previous sexploitation flicks, shot in Florida - specifically around Miami Beach's Suez Motel over the course of five days - because the two Chicago-based duo preferred the Sunshine State's warm climate (and cheap locations). Their first of three splatter films was so bad that it bombed when it first played in New York at midnight and was sold as "the worst movie of all time." Still, Lewis and Friedman's seminal cinematic gross-out did solid business on the drive-in circuit, though Lewis and Friedman had to fight to see any of the film's initial earnings.
Today, BLOOD FEAST remains compelling given its ineffable mix of amateurish filmmaking, Z-grade production values, and grand guignol-influenced ambitions. Gaze past Mal Arnold's fake eyebrows into his hypnotic eyes! Gasp at Playboy playmate Connie Mason's atrocious line delivery! Swoon at the violence that was so convincing that it led some very confused real-life Floridians to call the cops on Lewis and his crew! Not recommended for small children, or anyone with good taste.
