Released during the tail end of the 90s (when the "erotic thriller" reigned supreme in Hollywood), WILD THINGS is demonstrable proof that the genre itself is an overlooked goldmine of entertainment, containing all the trappings and twists one would expect to find in the genre while also reveling in a mischievous glee that is not easy for many films to pull off. High school teacher Sam Lombardo (Matt Dillon), along with social polar opposites Kelly Van Ryan (Denise Richards) and Suzie Toller (Neve Campbell), scheme to use the legal system to get millions from Kelly's rich family by faking a sexual assault charge against him. However, Detective Ray Duquette (Kevin Bacon) is on the case and is totally immersed in a seedy world of murder, sex, and unrelenting deceit. Oh, and did we mention the twists? And Bill Murray?! Set and filmed in Miami (a backdrop that fittingly weaves itself into the fabric of the story via many different locations), WILD THINGS is almost the dictionary definition of a "guilty pleasure". Definitely best seen with a crowd.
