Tuesday, Jan 23, 2018 10:00 PM (Doors @ 9:00 PM) $7 18+ THE NUDE PARTY (Upstate NY) The Nude Party congealed as one unit in the southern mountain town of Boone, NC in 2013 and gained their namesake very literally. Bonded by isolation, house party debauchery, a religion based on pushing the limits of bad taste, and a precocious predisposition towards the Kinks, the Animals and the Velvets, they have burgeoned into a rock and roll act to be reckoned with. As the hysteria at their local shows steadily increases, so does their reputation with local law enforcement, forcing them daily more to seek employment anywhere but home. While snooping cops seeking to stamp out indiscriminate behavior scour the borders of their homestead the Nude Ranch, the group has prodigally exiled themselves and are staying scarce with a string of self booked tours and one night stands which have linked them up with with such likes as The Growlers, The Oblivians, La Luz, Night Beats, and King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard. Their stripped down and bare bone sound, akin to the British Invasion being transplanted back into the Carolina mountains, has so far proven to have been unrecordable… until now. The secret? Sticking to the obvious and going down into a sweaty basement with a few mics, fewer clothes and a revolving door of comrades and goddesses falling by for as long as they can take the heat. Lately the Nudes have even gotten good at playing with their clothes on. BUTTHOLE (Nashville) 2 Slices: Best Believe

Tuesday, Jan 30, 2018 9:00 PM (Doors @ 9:00 PM) $7 18+ Dex Romweber: For nearly 30 years, the name Dex Romweber has been the password to a cool club. It lets the doorman size you up through the slit in the green door that leads to a world where rock and roll is still real… and real, real gone. Dex's progeny, impacted by his wild and wildly influential work in Flat Duo Jets, his Duo and solo, includes the White Stripes, the Black Keys, the Kills, Man or Astroman? and dozens of other bands that have stripped down, turned up, and cut loose. Songs don’t just come out of Dex, they seem to erupt; there is an unearthly urgency in the singer and the song. There’s no tamping it down, Dex lays it out there every time. But sometimes – in all that mind-blowing sound and energy – the soul often gets overlooked, and Dex is, above all else, a deeply soulful performer. Optimistic yet introspective songwriting- elements of post-punk grooves with garage rock punch that incorporates elements of Latina heritage. The sounds of Mama, now a solo project, take shape to occupy sonically the current socio-political realm with honest perseverance and compassion with elements of Dream Pop, Electronic Looped Poly-rhythms, Ambient Grooves to highlight the dialectical relationship of being an individual in the modern anthropocenic world. https://vimeo.com/227360172 https://www.facebook.com/amammaaaaa/

Broke Jokes: Garage rock for cold pizza eaters Kali Masi: In 2011, Kali Masi were picking up the pieces and seeing what would fit back together. Individually, they were rebuilding themselves. Their respective bands had imploded, they were desperate to outrun the shell-shock and start over. In a basement in the Chicago suburbs where mildew crept up the wood-paneled walls, Kali Masi began writing their first EP. The band carved out a sonic space between the urgency of the punk and hardcore bands that were our foundation and the Midwestern Emo breeze that was sweeping through their towns at the time. But they wanted to be a counterpoint for the evergreen music scene that thrives in Chicago; to move with the current but never float on the surface.

OMNI w/ Patois Counselors, Konvoi

February 16, 10:00p.m. - 2:00a.m.

Friday, Feb 16, 2018 10:00 PM (Doors @ 9:00 PM) $8 ADV / $10 DOS 18+ Omni: Framed from within the relentless heatwave of Atlanta, Georgia, Omni cuts through the oppressive humidity of the gilded southern capital with a cool and breezy combo of lo-fi nonchalance. In paying homage to post-punk forebears like Pylon, Wire and Devo, Omni delivers a succinct and focused sound on their 2016 debut. Strung taut with wiry guitar and incisive rhythms, their approach is not without plenty of sneaky, danceable melodies to round off the hard angles. Indeed, 'Deluxe' represents a mission statement to cruise a steady though lavish wave of disenchantment like it’s 1979. Patois Counselors: Gangster NC post-punk pop, featuring members of Yardwork, Calabi Yau, HRVRD, Brain F Konvoi: Konvoi's music feels like a fistfight. On its full-length, self-titled debut, the Boone quartet stammers and snarls and shouts, with Sean Bos tossing off imprecations over a band that harnesses the power of hardcore to the blessed structural instability of post-punk. As blown-out bass lashes whip-like against drums that forsake neither punch nor power, David Cate wields his guitar like an amorphous weapon, capable of strangling, stabbing, bludgeoning, and biting. Some of these songs deliver big, burly hooks, while others tend to delight in their defiance of such conventions by splitting melodies and licks into a half-dozen broken pieces. Issued tonight by Chapel Hill's Snot Releases, Konvoi is one of the state's essential records this year. -Grayson Haver Currin

BULLY

April 28, 10:00p.m. - 2:00a.m.

Saturday, Apr 28, 2018 10:00 PM (Doors @ 9:00 PM) $12 ADV $15 DOS 18+ Bully: Bully burst onto the scene in 2015 with their critically acclaimed album Feels Like. Today the band announces Losing. The album was engineered and mixed by lead-singer Alicia Bognanno in Chicago at Electrical Audio. Fronted by Alicia Bognanno, Bully was born in 2013. Bognanno was an engineer who had cut her teeth working at Electrical Audio in Chicago. Together with guitarist Clayton Parker and Reece Lazarus on bass, they made a debut album received unanimous critical acclaim and Bognanno became a point of intrigue. A rock icon in the making, with her signature scream, messy blonde hair hanging in her face, and formidable skills as both a player and a engineer who prefers recording to tape. "The coarse Cobain head-scream of Bully singer, songwriter and guitarist Alicia Bognanno is its own resuscitating jolt of protest," said Pitchfork. "She spends much of Feels Like tearing the house down with her howl." The success propelled the band into an exhaustive touring cycle with spots on huge festivals such as Bonnaroo, Lollapallooza, Pitchfork Music Festival and ACL and a late night appearance on Conan. While Feels Like tumbled headlong into the precarious nature of Bognanno's young adult life, Losing is a document of the complexity of growth: navigating breakups with sensitivity, learning not to run away from your troubles but to face them no matter how messy they may be. The debut single, "Feel The Same' is the album opener. Like an electric-shock Bognanno is back in your face tackling the angst of a young person feeling their way through the world. The song describes the prison of a manic mind-set, being trapped in your own head. On "Seeing It" she addresses the issue of personal safety and navigating the world as a woman. On "Running" she focuses on personal relationships and the avoidance of facing the demise of a personal relationship. Losing is an internal, carefully focused record, a universalized diary and an exorcism-not of any one specific demon, but the host of them that characterize contemporary anxieties. Bully are growing up, sure, but their fire is in no way diminishing.
