Epic Beard Men (Sage Francis + B. Dolan)

April 30, 8:00p.m.

Sage Francis, Bernard Dolan at Flagstaff's Green Room Epic Beard Men Sage Francis + B.Dolan = EPIC BEARD MEN! After a decade of sharing stages and crafting collaborations in the studio, real-life rap BFFs SAGE FRANCIS and B. DOLAN have finally caved to years of fan pressure to form an official group: EPIC BEARD MEN. The super-duo embraced the absurd name as a reminder to themselves that, while they tackle a lot of difficult subject matter in their solo work, this group’s mission* boils down to one thing: “This is supposed to be fun, for fuck’s sake.” STRANGE FAMOUS RECORDS released their “WAR ON CHRISTMAS” single for free last December as a teaser of what the team has in store for the new year, and made it crystal clear that these two are not just here to discuss personal grooming; The EPIC BEARD MEN are gunning for a spot among your favorite partnerships in music. The stockpile of songs they’ve been meticulously obsessing over for last 2+ years feature Francis and Dolan tackling a vast array of concepts and trading off some of the most sardonic, punchy, and fun lyrics you’re likely to hear in 2018. The “SEASON 1” EP contains 8 songs and will be released in late February. The collection is stacked with a signature blend of dusty breaks and absurdist lyrics, infectious grooves and slapping snares, plus the effortless rapport of two of indie rap’s best passing the baton back and forth with the only other emcee capable of running this rap race at such a breakneck pace. EBM’s full-length debut album is slated to drop in October. In the interim, fans can expect videos, remixes, social media meltdowns, and lots…’o…touring

L.A. Witch * Strange Mistress * Wasabi * Wicked Sister

May 10, 8:00p.m.

L.A. WITCH * Strange Mistress * Wasabi at Flagstaff's Green Room In the dimly lit interior of a small nightclub, where the stale smell of a thousand extinguished cigarettes drowns out the smell of spilt beer and broken dreams, a band plays against a backdrop of cheap golden tinsel. Outside, palm trees line the night’s horizon. In the years to come, the streets will swell into highways and interstates, but for now Los Angeles is still a young city growing daily with transplants from across the United States, all looking for a new life. It’s still a city largely cut off from the rest of the country, and in the years before the Manson family forever tarnishes the infinite hope of the Western enclave and before the Hell’s Angels of Altamont interrupt rock n’ roll’s peaceful trajectory with unprecedented violence, there is still a dreamy California sound for those dark rooms suffused with neon light. The three women of L.A. Witch wouldn’t be born for several decades, but their sound transports you back to those warm Californian nights in smoky rooms. The name is a partial misnomer. Though the band hails from Los Angeles, they do not partake in any sort of witchcraft. Yet their ability to conjure a specific time and place through their sound does suggest a kind of magic. On their eponymous debut album, L.A. Witch’s reverb-drenched guitar jangle and sultry vocals conjure the analog sound of a collector’s prized 45 from some short-lived footnote cult band. The melodies forgo the bubblegum pop for a druggy haze that straddles the line between seedy glory and ominous balladry; the production can’t afford Phil Spector’s wall-of-sound, but the instruments’ simple beauty provides an economic grace that renders studio trickery unnecessary; the lyrics seem more descendent of Johnny Cash’s first-person morality tales than the vacuous empty gestures of pre-fab pop bands. This isn’t music for the masses; it’s music for miscreants, burnouts, down-and-out dreamers, and obsessive historians. Album opener “Kill My Baby Tonight” is the perfect introduction to the band’s marriage of ‘60s girls-in-the-garage charm and David Lynch’s surreal exposés of Southern California’s underbelly. Sade Sanchez’s black velvet vocals disguise the malicious intent of this murder ballad, with the thumping pulse of bassist Irita Pai, the slow-burn build of drummer Ellie English, and Sanchez’s desert guitar twang helping beguile the listener into becoming a willing accomplice to the narrator’s crimes. “Brian” follows the opening track with a similarly graceful, if not somewhat ominous, slow-mo take on a well-worn jukebox 7”. It’s a vibe that permeates the entire album, from the early psychedelic hue of 13th Floor Elevators on tracks like “You Love Nothing,” through the motorik beat and fuzzed-out licks of “Drive Your Car,” to the grittier permutation of Mazzy Star’s sleepy beauty on “Baby In Blue Jeans.” L.A. WITCH was recorded at Hurley Studios in Costa Mesa and mixed in Highland Park, Los Angeles, though early incarnations of several songs from the album originally surfaced on limited edition singles released over the last several years. The band’s initial aspirations were humble. “We never really thought we would or could release an album,” the band says. “We were really just finding each other and finding our sound.” But after touring nearly non-stop for the last three years, L.A. WITCH developed a singularly seductive, haunting, and wistful sound that enamored the garage rock, dream pop, psych, and broader indie communities. ---- Strange Mistress Establishing themselves as one of the heaviest rock bands from Las Vegas, NV, Strange Mistress creates a raw and unique style of alternative rock that will take you far beyond this world. Strange Miss blends howling vocals and electrifying guitar riffs with a thunder driven rhythm section which creates the pillars of their cosmic sound. ------- Wasabi was formed by singer-songwriter Satori, playing guitar as a soloist before learning to play well with others. Her collaborative efforts eventually led her to playing with a variety of local musicians and recording her first album. The album,"Three Doors Down From Reality" was changed to "Still Waiting" when the project took 3 years to complete. The finished product was so diverse, it made her realize she didn't know who she was anymore. Many gigs & performances later, she stumbled upon the distinctive talents of Mat Allen on bass, & Alec Tippet on drums, and Wasabi's dynamic sound came together. Described as a "primal siren, winged-punk she-Demon, with vocals equal parts confessional and explosive, Wasabi's original music covers the spectrum from beautific to psychotic". ----- Wicked Sister is a hard rock female duo made up of two sisters with influences of The White Stripes, Led Zeppelin, Marilyn Manson, New Years Day, & Royal Blood. Their sound is a unique blend of witchy rock and edgy blues with a modern twist and alternative look.

Mac Sabbath W/ Special Guests at Flagstaff's Green Room

May 15, 8:00p.m.

Mac Sabbath W/ Special Guests at Flagstaff's Green Room It was the Year of Our Lord 2013, and I was devouring a cheeseburger in a Chatsworth, California, franchise of a certain multinational fast food conglomerate which shall remain nameless. Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed a crazed looking clown walking in my direction. Wearing a costume of bright yellow and red, and giant shiny shoes, he seemingly fit into the surroundings, but it didn’t take long to see that something wasn’t quite right. His costume was trailed by long, tattered, hippie fringe that was dirty from scraping the floor (and most likely the alley behind the restaurant), and more alarmingly his face was caked in ghostly make up that looked like it had been smeared on with a putty knife. My first thought was that he looked like Skeletor as a member of Uriah Heap. Taking a seat in my booth, he informed me that his name was Ronald Osborne, and he that he was familiar with my oddity rock band Rosemary’s Billygoat. He was a fan of the band, and said he had a concept I might appreciate, something he termed “drive-thru metal.” Some of the delinquent kids who worked for the franchise had been allowing him and a cast of characters named Slayer Mac Cheeze, Grimalice, and the Cat Burglar, to perform secret rock shows in the bunker-like basements of the local restaurants. But the time had come, he said, to bring drive-thru metal up from the “underground,” and he asked if I would consider becoming the manager of his band. I asked him what the act was called, and proclaimed with pride, "Mac Sabbath!” I barely had time to gather up what was left of my faux food before the restaurant’s manager, apparently annoyed both by the disheveled clown and the content of our conversation, came over and forcefully assisted us out onto the street. As we hit the sidewalk, I looked over at Ronald, watched him brush the dust of cold fries, sodium chloride and GMO remnants of my UN happy meal from his grease-smeared clown suit, and couldn’t help but think there was something special, perhaps even great, about the man. He invited me to one of these secret shows, and two nights later I was sitting in the basement of a fast food restaurant in the San Fernando Valley, my eyes and taste buds tingling to a new sensation. Drive-thru metal was real, and talk about a feast for the senses! Black Sabbath’s music, hilarious fast food lyrics, smoldering clown heads with laser eyes, a giant purple gumdrop bass player, and Tony Iommi with a giant cheeseburger head. I was confused, amazed, and dare I say it, can’t ever remember feeling so………happy! I told Ronald that yes, I would love to manage his band. It wasn’t going to be easy—nothing ever is with a disturbed clown and a band of Monsanto mutants who refuse to reveal their identities because they think they came here from a wormhole in space time direct from 1970. But whoever they are and however they got here, they’re here now and they’re ready, so pull up to the window and check your order, because I am proud to present the world’s newest concept in entertainment, the culinary disgrace that is Mac Sabbath!

May 25, 8:00p.m.

Blacktop Mojo * Joyous Wolf * OF LIMBO at Flagstaff's Green Room Blacktop Mojo is a hard rock band from Palestine, Texas that channels a heavy, gritty sound that seamlessly blends melody and adrenaline. With sludgy, rigid guitar lines and soaring, ariose vocal runs, twisted around psychedelic story-telling; Blacktop Mojo's songs deal with everything from ballads of love and loss, to epic tales of overcoming death itself, all delivered in the package of staunch, hard rock. Blacktop Mojo was formed in September 2012 by lead vocalist Matt James, drummer Nathan Gillis. Armed with a demo EP and a dream, the band set out to play as many shows as they could, anywhere that they could, playing any type of music they could think of to hone their craft and find their sound. In their short time together, playing shows across the state, the band has shared the stage with a range of touring artists including Aaron Lewis, Candlebox, Drowning Pool, Puddle of Mudd, Whiskey Myers, Dirty River Boys, and The Bigsbys, among others. Through touring, the band was introduced to their fifth member, lead guitarist, Ryan Kiefer. Through a series of impromptu sessions at the band’s infamous “Jam Shack”, Kiefer fell right into place with the band. He liked the same music, had the same taste in off-color humor, and most importantly, his style of guitar playing fit flawlessly into place with Irwin’s brand of shredding to form a specially blended dual guitar attack While the band enjoys playing their favorite cover songs, they are truly impassioned with crafting their own original music. "The thing that makes us different from a lot of bands today is that ALL of us write the songs," says drummer Nathan Gillis. "My best five songs have to beat out Matt's 5 songs. Matt's best 5 have to beat out Ryan's best, and so on. It makes us really versatile in our styles and how we write. The thing that I also love about this band,” Gillis continues, “is that we can all sit in a room and write songs TOGETHER as well.” Through many months of this type of collaboration, between playing shows, the band put together their first Full-Length album, titled, “I AM”. The album was recorded and mastered at Rosewood Studios in Tyler, Texas with the help of Producer Philip Mosley, Staff Engineer Drew Hall, and Mixing Engineer Austin Deptula. “We titled this album, ‘I Am’ because it makes a statement about who we are as a band, which is taking a crazy group of scatterbrained guys, with different writing and playing styles, sitting down in a room together with all of our separate thoughts and approaches to writing songs, and turning that into a singular energy, that we can all be proud of,” says vocalist Matt James. ----------------------------------- Joyous Wolf is a Rock band from Southern California formed in 2014 by vocalist Nick Reese, guitarist Blake Allard, bassist Greg Braccio, and drummer Robert Sodaro. Reese and Sodaro met on their first day of 6th grade during student orientation. They went to different high schools where Sodaro would go on to befriend Braccio. During that time Reese, by chance, met Allard in the acoustic room at Guitar Center where they would jam CCR’s “Born on the Bayou”. There was an immediate dynamic between the two that ultimately led to an exchange of information. Months later Reese reached out to both Sodaro and Allard with the interest of starting a new project with them. Braccio would soon follow suit. In the waning months of 2014 early jam sessions would yield the foundation of what Joyous Wolf has become. Fusing together influences ranging from Heavy Metal to Delta Blues, Joyous Wolf creates an expressive, high-energy fingerprint that separates themselves from their contemporaries in the realm of Modern Rock. ------------------------------------- OF LIMBO Brothers Jake and Luke Davies were raised in Melbourne, Australia. Growing up on rock ’n’ roll, they developed a passion for playing music together, one that would lead them to Long Beach, California, where in 2014 they formed of limbo. With the addition of Herbie Brady on bass and Anthony Aguilar on drums, they released their self-titled, self-produced debut EP soon after, which established the band’s sound as a versatile and refreshingly modern take on rock, contrary to the generic and stale trends surrounding them. Two years of shows across greater Los Angeles quickly garnered them a reputation for their wild and dynamic performances, showing a presence reminiscent of rock bands from the early 90s. The group’s newest release “Nicotine” is now available on all leading outlets. With the addition of Juan Paz on drums, keep an eye on of limbo in the years to come.

Larry and His Flask w/Acousta Noir at Flagstaff's Green Room

June 3, 7:00p.m.

LARRY AND HIS FLASK w/ Acousta Noir LARRY AND HIS FLASK are a five piece, high energy Rock and Roll band that incorporate elements of Punk, Gypsy Jazz, Folk and Americana music. Some people refer to them as “Folk Punk” or “Punk-Grass”, but regardless of genre classification they strive to bring the party to every crowd. Their goal is to get everyone stomping, clapping, dancing, smiling and having a damn good time! The Flask’s instrumentation is unusual and very unique for punk rock and rock n roll bands: Jeshua Marshall – Stand up Bass, Harmonicas, Baritone Horn, Vocals Ian Cook – Electric Guitar, Lead Vocals Andrew Carew – Banjo, Trombone, Trumpet, Lead and Backup Vocals Kirk Skatvold – Mandolin, Trumpet, Backup Vocals Jamin Marshall – Stand up Drummer, Backup Vocals Larry And His Flask have been a band for 14 years. They have slowly transitioned from hardcore punk band to folk street performers to the harmonious rock/party that they are today. The band is based out of Bend, Oregon, right at the foot of Mt. Bachelor in the heart of Pacific Northwest. In the last few years they have chosen to take some time off the road and concentrate on other interests, but now they are back and better than ever! Larry and His Flask are in the studio recording a brand new full length album after 5 years. This will be the band’s 3rd full length album in it’s current musical style. The band’s independent and do it yourself attitude has taken them down a road less traveled, however it has proven to be a very exciting and eventful one. Acousta Noir Coming from a background shaped by punk, rock and roll, roots, and various traditional folk styles, Acousta Noir brings a unique, yet oddly familiar, set of original songs to the table, along with his renditions of select and obscure covers. Joshua first began playing music in 1994, and has been a part of a varied array of musical projects. These include punk bands (as a singer, guitarist, and drummer), singing for a heavy metal band, and a couple projects playing the upright bass. Acousta Noir sets itself apart from the crowd by being akin to many acts, but defiantly unique from them all. Life tends to work a little differently in Douglas County, Oregon, and Joshua works hard to embody that lifestyle in his music, while creatively utilizing his influences of traditional folk and country music, as well as punk rock and the good old story tellin' side of things. "Just how much punch can one guy pack into a set? You'll be reeling as he blends raw bluesy soul with a rough and rowdy edge. If you like to dance, stomp your feet, or just have a good time, be there."

In the Whale * Abolitionist at Flagstaff's Green Room

July 18, 8:00p.m.

In The Whale * abolitionist at Flagstaff's Green Room In The Whale “Dirty, fun and caked in garage grime, the songs are unconcerned with trends.” -Bob Gendron, Chicago Tribune Celebrating their seven year anniversary in 2018, Denver heavy rock duo, In The Whale have been turning heads and accumulating a mass of die hard fans and followers thanks to a relentless tour schedule and a go-for-the-throat live performance. Artists and festival promoters have caught notice, with the band playing Riot Fest, Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits, Afro Punk, as well as shows with the likes of Jane’s Addiction, Descendents, The Offspring, Gogol Bordello, and many more. ------------------------------- Portland punks abolitionist are revealing details for their fourth LP, The Instant, out May 1st. Recorded in 5 days at Supernatural Sound Studios in Oregon City, Oregon, by engineer Robert Bartleson, and mastered by the mighty Jason Livermore at The Blasting Room, The Instant compiles 12 punchy tracks, drawing sonically from a variety of punk and hardcore influences. The album also explores (through yet another dystopian storyline) the human tendency to follow the herd in the name of lofty ideals -- often at the expense of individual freedom, if not human life. The album art & layout was done by Horsebites (Fat Wreck Chords, Epitaph, The FEST), who previously did art & layout on the band's first and third LPs. Formed in 2009 by vocalist/guitarist Dustin Herron, abolitionist had a continually shifting lineup over the years before settling on the current lineup of Jeremy Dunlap on lead guitar, Joseph Mohler on bass/vocals, and Sean Rule (of the nineties east coast punk band, Plow United) on drums. The Instant comes on the heels of three previous full-length vinyl LPs (all of which follow a dystopian storyline of some kind), and a tour around the western United States last summer. With a 2.5 week tour planned for this upcoming July, abolitionist is ready to charge into an increasingly unsettling future with nothing but two guitars, a bass, a drum kit, some amps, 146 combined years of life experience, and a couple of boxes of vinyl records for sale (maybe some shirts, too). Shit's fucked, so let's blow some eardrums.
