Blacktop Mojo * Joyous Wolf * Of Limbo at Flagstaff's Green Room

The Green Room

May 25, 8:00p.m.

Blacktop Mojo * Joyous Wolf * OF LIMBO at Flagstaff's Green Room Blacktop Mojo is a hard rock band from Palestine, Texas that channels a heavy, gritty sound that seamlessly blends melody and adrenaline. With sludgy, rigid guitar lines and soaring, ariose vocal runs, twisted around psychedelic story-telling; Blacktop Mojo's songs deal with everything from ballads of love and loss, to epic tales of overcoming death itself, all delivered in the package of staunch, hard rock. Blacktop Mojo was formed in September 2012 by lead vocalist Matt James, drummer Nathan Gillis. Armed with a demo EP and a dream, the band set out to play as many shows as they could, anywhere that they could, playing any type of music they could think of to hone their craft and find their sound. In their short time together, playing shows across the state, the band has shared the stage with a range of touring artists including Aaron Lewis, Candlebox, Drowning Pool, Puddle of Mudd, Whiskey Myers, Dirty River Boys, and The Bigsbys, among others. Through touring, the band was introduced to their fifth member, lead guitarist, Ryan Kiefer. Through a series of impromptu sessions at the band’s infamous “Jam Shack”, Kiefer fell right into place with the band. He liked the same music, had the same taste in off-color humor, and most importantly, his style of guitar playing fit flawlessly into place with Irwin’s brand of shredding to form a specially blended dual guitar attack While the band enjoys playing their favorite cover songs, they are truly impassioned with crafting their own original music. "The thing that makes us different from a lot of bands today is that ALL of us write the songs," says drummer Nathan Gillis. "My best five songs have to beat out Matt's 5 songs. Matt's best 5 have to beat out Ryan's best, and so on. It makes us really versatile in our styles and how we write. The thing that I also love about this band,” Gillis continues, “is that we can all sit in a room and write songs TOGETHER as well.” Through many months of this type of collaboration, between playing shows, the band put together their first Full-Length album, titled, “I AM”. The album was recorded and mastered at Rosewood Studios in Tyler, Texas with the help of Producer Philip Mosley, Staff Engineer Drew Hall, and Mixing Engineer Austin Deptula. “We titled this album, ‘I Am’ because it makes a statement about who we are as a band, which is taking a crazy group of scatterbrained guys, with different writing and playing styles, sitting down in a room together with all of our separate thoughts and approaches to writing songs, and turning that into a singular energy, that we can all be proud of,” says vocalist Matt James. ----------------------------------- Joyous Wolf is a Rock band from Southern California formed in 2014 by vocalist Nick Reese, guitarist Blake Allard, bassist Greg Braccio, and drummer Robert Sodaro. Reese and Sodaro met on their first day of 6th grade during student orientation. They went to different high schools where Sodaro would go on to befriend Braccio. During that time Reese, by chance, met Allard in the acoustic room at Guitar Center where they would jam CCR’s “Born on the Bayou”. There was an immediate dynamic between the two that ultimately led to an exchange of information. Months later Reese reached out to both Sodaro and Allard with the interest of starting a new project with them. Braccio would soon follow suit. In the waning months of 2014 early jam sessions would yield the foundation of what Joyous Wolf has become. Fusing together influences ranging from Heavy Metal to Delta Blues, Joyous Wolf creates an expressive, high-energy fingerprint that separates themselves from their contemporaries in the realm of Modern Rock. ------------------------------------- OF LIMBO Brothers Jake and Luke Davies were raised in Melbourne, Australia. Growing up on rock ’n’ roll, they developed a passion for playing music together, one that would lead them to Long Beach, California, where in 2014 they formed of limbo. With the addition of Herbie Brady on bass and Anthony Aguilar on drums, they released their self-titled, self-produced debut EP soon after, which established the band’s sound as a versatile and refreshingly modern take on rock, contrary to the generic and stale trends surrounding them. Two years of shows across greater Los Angeles quickly garnered them a reputation for their wild and dynamic performances, showing a presence reminiscent of rock bands from the early 90s. The group’s newest release “Nicotine” is now available on all leading outlets. With the addition of Juan Paz on drums, keep an eye on of limbo in the years to come.

Larry and His Flask w/Acousta Noir at Flagstaff's Green Room

The Green Room

June 3, 7:00p.m.

LARRY AND HIS FLASK w/ Acousta Noir LARRY AND HIS FLASK are a five piece, high energy Rock and Roll band that incorporate elements of Punk, Gypsy Jazz, Folk and Americana music. Some people refer to them as “Folk Punk” or “Punk-Grass”, but regardless of genre classification they strive to bring the party to every crowd. Their goal is to get everyone stomping, clapping, dancing, smiling and having a damn good time! The Flask’s instrumentation is unusual and very unique for punk rock and rock n roll bands: Jeshua Marshall – Stand up Bass, Harmonicas, Baritone Horn, Vocals Ian Cook – Electric Guitar, Lead Vocals Andrew Carew – Banjo, Trombone, Trumpet, Lead and Backup Vocals Kirk Skatvold – Mandolin, Trumpet, Backup Vocals Jamin Marshall – Stand up Drummer, Backup Vocals Larry And His Flask have been a band for 14 years. They have slowly transitioned from hardcore punk band to folk street performers to the harmonious rock/party that they are today. The band is based out of Bend, Oregon, right at the foot of Mt. Bachelor in the heart of Pacific Northwest. In the last few years they have chosen to take some time off the road and concentrate on other interests, but now they are back and better than ever! Larry and His Flask are in the studio recording a brand new full length album after 5 years. This will be the band’s 3rd full length album in it’s current musical style. The band’s independent and do it yourself attitude has taken them down a road less traveled, however it has proven to be a very exciting and eventful one. Acousta Noir Coming from a background shaped by punk, rock and roll, roots, and various traditional folk styles, Acousta Noir brings a unique, yet oddly familiar, set of original songs to the table, along with his renditions of select and obscure covers. Joshua first began playing music in 1994, and has been a part of a varied array of musical projects. These include punk bands (as a singer, guitarist, and drummer), singing for a heavy metal band, and a couple projects playing the upright bass. Acousta Noir sets itself apart from the crowd by being akin to many acts, but defiantly unique from them all. Life tends to work a little differently in Douglas County, Oregon, and Joshua works hard to embody that lifestyle in his music, while creatively utilizing his influences of traditional folk and country music, as well as punk rock and the good old story tellin' side of things. "Just how much punch can one guy pack into a set? You'll be reeling as he blends raw bluesy soul with a rough and rowdy edge. If you like to dance, stomp your feet, or just have a good time, be there."

In the Whale * Abolitionist at Flagstaff's Green Room

The Green Room

July 18, 8:00p.m.

In The Whale * abolitionist at Flagstaff's Green Room In The Whale “Dirty, fun and caked in garage grime, the songs are unconcerned with trends.” -Bob Gendron, Chicago Tribune Celebrating their seven year anniversary in 2018, Denver heavy rock duo, In The Whale have been turning heads and accumulating a mass of die hard fans and followers thanks to a relentless tour schedule and a go-for-the-throat live performance. Artists and festival promoters have caught notice, with the band playing Riot Fest, Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits, Afro Punk, as well as shows with the likes of Jane’s Addiction, Descendents, The Offspring, Gogol Bordello, and many more. ------------------------------- Portland punks abolitionist are revealing details for their fourth LP, The Instant, out May 1st. Recorded in 5 days at Supernatural Sound Studios in Oregon City, Oregon, by engineer Robert Bartleson, and mastered by the mighty Jason Livermore at The Blasting Room, The Instant compiles 12 punchy tracks, drawing sonically from a variety of punk and hardcore influences. The album also explores (through yet another dystopian storyline) the human tendency to follow the herd in the name of lofty ideals -- often at the expense of individual freedom, if not human life. The album art & layout was done by Horsebites (Fat Wreck Chords, Epitaph, The FEST), who previously did art & layout on the band's first and third LPs. Formed in 2009 by vocalist/guitarist Dustin Herron, abolitionist had a continually shifting lineup over the years before settling on the current lineup of Jeremy Dunlap on lead guitar, Joseph Mohler on bass/vocals, and Sean Rule (of the nineties east coast punk band, Plow United) on drums. The Instant comes on the heels of three previous full-length vinyl LPs (all of which follow a dystopian storyline of some kind), and a tour around the western United States last summer. With a 2.5 week tour planned for this upcoming July, abolitionist is ready to charge into an increasingly unsettling future with nothing but two guitars, a bass, a drum kit, some amps, 146 combined years of life experience, and a couple of boxes of vinyl records for sale (maybe some shirts, too). Shit's fucked, so let's blow some eardrums.
