House of Wax
January 16, 7:00p.m. - 9:00p.m.
Come ease on down the road with us at this all-singing, all-dancing, all-interactive celebration the ‘70s most undersung musical! In this super soul reimagining of L. Frank Baum’s classic children’s tale, Dorothy is now a shy 24-year-old Harlem kindergarten teacher played by Diana Ross. A snowstorm transports her to the mysterious Land of Oz, presented here as sprawling a dream version of New York City. What follows is a Motown musical adventure too bonkers even by 1978 standards, featuring a cast of all-time greats like the King of Pop himself, Michael Jackson, Lena Horne and Richard Pryor(!), just to name the headliners. THE WIZ is about as original and crazy fun as they come, and we’re going kick that fun right up over the rainbow with themed props to bring the magic and the music to life inside the theater, plus other fun and surprise we’re keeping behind the magic curtain until showtime. Dancing at your seat and in the aisles is downright mandatory.

One night, two films with director Adam Rifkin, live! First, DETROIT ROCK CITY is the odyssey of four high school bandmates who are willing to do whatever it takes to see the band who inspired them to pick up instruments in the first place. Along the way they violate all realms of decency and morality (T2’s Edward Furlong does a strip tease "Strutter") to bask in the alter of their rock gods. Followed by, THE DARK BACKWARD starring Judd Nelson as Marty, a garbage man who has been trying out his stand up comedy, mousily addressing an indifferent audience, drenched in sweat. Things take a turn when he suddenly grows a fully working arm out of his back, catching the eye of a sleazy talent agent. Both films will be presented in 35mm and each will be followed by a Q&A with Adam Rifkin!

History Lesson: Both a German and Pennsylvania Dutch tradition, families indulge in Fasnachts/Fastnachts on Shrove Tuesday before Ash Wednesday and the start of the Lent season. The fatty homemade doughnuts, coated in sugar, were traditionally made by housewives on Fat Tuesday, making the doughnuts was a way to use up all of the fat such as lard in the house before fasting. Fasnacht is a German word meaning "night before the fast."

Traditionally, it was not only a feast before Lent but also a time during which the rules and order of daily life were subverted. This gave rise to such customs as handing over the keys of the city to a council of fools or ceremoniously letting women rule. It also inspired noisy costumed parades and masked balls; satirical and often impertinent plays, speeches, and newspaper columns; and generally excessive behavior.

Besides the famous Oktoberfest, Starkbierfest (or the 5th season) is the second big beer festival in Munich and a great opportunity to have fun with your friends and wear the traditional Dirndl or Lederhosen. Historical origin of the strong beer or Bockbier lies in catholic religion: the monks were not allowed to eat during the period of fasting, and therefore brewed dark beer which was much stronger in calories and alcohol to substitute for food, "Liquid Bread" of sorts. You might be surprised to learn that although Stark means “strong” in German, the name of Starkbier doesn’t actually refer to the alcoholic punch it packs, rather the beer’s Stammwürze or "original wort". This indicates the amount of solids in the beverage. Nowadays most people don't fast anymore, but the dark beer and the beer festival has survived the times so don't miss this "little Oktoberfest". We will offer 15 of Germany's best Strong Biers! Decked out in BLACK AND GOLD our Brauer Bund Bierhall will have traditional bench seating for 140 of our closest friends and fans. Session Start Times: Friday 7PM Saturday 1PM / Saturday 4:30PM / Saturday 8PM $15 ($20 at the door) Includes: Admission, ceramic 10 oz. Brauhaus Schmitz branded beer stein, first StarkBier and live entertainment! Tickets are limited and seating is first come first serve. Special Festival menu will be available for additional purchase.
