The Golem With Gary Lucas Live

House of Wax

October 26, 7:00p.m. - 9:00p.m.

The legend of the Golem—a man made from clay brought to life through kabbalistic magic in 16th century Prague by the actual historical rabbi Jehuda Loew to protect the Jewish community from pogroms—is one of the most enduring and resonant stories in all of Jewish mythology. The 1920 silent film THE GOLEM directed by Paul Wegener and Carl Boese, is considered the definitive version of this amazing tale. Legendary guitarist Gary Lucas, whom The New Yorker magazine described as "The Thinking Man's Guitar Hero", was inexorably drawn to this tale...and this film. His original solo guitar score for THE GOLEM is considered a classic—a seamless blend of innovative music and fantastic cinema which has been delighting and thrilling audiences in sold out theaters and festivals around the world since he debuted his score in 1989.

Prince of Darkness Screening

House of Wax

October 30, 7:00p.m. - 11:30p.m.

In celebration of John Carpenter's new album Anthology: Movie Themes 1974-1998 as well as the 30th anniversary of PRINCE OF DARKNESS, we're pleased to present alongside Sacred Bones Records two screenings of his cult horror classic. This is how to age gracefully. Like Jack Kirby's FOURTH WORLD comic books, PRINCE OF DARKNESS is John Carpenter's pet-project masterwork -- a sprawling, Lovecraft-ian folk epic about demons, science, and unseen evil. A group of college students and professors camp out in a decrepit church to research the unexplainable charms of Satan. Once there, they're flung into a netherworld that's populated by zombies who hijack souls, Donald Pleasance with an axe, and Alice Cooper as a homicidal hobo. Released ten years after HALLOWEEN, PRINCE OF DARKNESS is John Carpenter stopping to smell the roses. It's heavy on development, but even heavier on violence, dread, and payoff -- like Fulci's THE BEYOND if that movie was rooted in the existential angst of late-80s America. As a professor says in the movie's opening minutes, "Say goodbye to classical reality." Preceded by the new John Carpenter-directed music video for "Christine".

Tom Hanks: Live from the Texas Book Festival

House of Wax

November 4, 4:30p.m. - 6:30p.m.

We’re partnering with the Texas Book Festival to present an evening with the man, the myth, THE HANKS! Not content with merely being an Oscar winner, cultural icon, Hollywood mogul, SNL secret weapon, and all-around swell human being, Mr. Tom Hanks has added published author to his long list of achievements. His first collection of shorts, “Uncommon Type: Some Stories,” hits shelves this October, but the buzz is already swelling. “It turns out that Tom Hanks is also a wise and hilarious writer with an endlessly surprising mind,” says some guy named Steve Martin. “Damn it.” And Mindy Kaling says that Hanks’ poignant and playful writing is, “exactly what you hope from him, except you wish he were sitting in your home, reading it aloud to you, one story at a time.” While we can’t deliver Tom Hanks to your home for a private reading sesh, we can invite you to our exclusive livestream event happening at Alamo Drafthouse locations nationwide on Saturday, Nov 4. Gather with us at this one night-only event to hear dear ol’ Hanks read and discuss a sampling of the seventeen stories comprising “Uncommon Type" beamed live from the First Baptist Church in Austin, TX. As warm and magnetic as Hanks is on film, we’re betting this intimate evening will feel as fun, freewheeling, and satisfying as time spent with a dear old friend — just, you know, a friend who’s like a really big deal. It’s also a safe bet tickets will be gone faster than you can name any Hanks movie. Book purchase required with ticket. Grab yours now.

The Brood With Live Score

House of Wax

November 9, 7:00p.m. - 9:00p.m.

Wrekmeister Harmonies perform a live score to David Cronenberg’s THE BROOD! Alternately described as “a brutal and sophisticated reworking of Me Decade horror motifs, a cinematic bad dream that generates recurring nightmares” by the New Yorker, to Roger Ebert’s scathing indictment as “an el sleazo exploitation film”, THE BROOD is as polarizing in the canon of the horror genre as it is fearful and mesmerizing. Sounding the death knell for the autumnal season before the deep winter freeze, this event promises the perfect storm of Wrekmeister Harmonies beautiful yet foreboding soundscapes and Cronenberg’s early display of unhinged visionary genius is not to be missed. NOTE: The movie will be played silent with subtitles onscreen.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi at Alamo Drafthouse

House of Wax

December 14, 6:00p.m. - 11:59p.m.

**Tickets on sale Monday, October 9th** This December, Alamo Drafthouse will once again be filled with the crackle of lightsabers, the awe-inspiring grandeur of starship battles, and the continuing story of a galaxy far, far away. . . . It’s time for some answers. Why did Luke Skywalker abandon his friends for the mysterious planet Ahch-To? Who are Rey’s parents? How will the evil Supreme Leader Snoke’s training further corrupt the former Ben Solo, Kylo Ren? Will reluctant hero Finn continue to fight the good fight? How cute are these Porgs? And who is the last Jedi? In STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI, visionary writer/director Rian Johnson (BRICK, LOOPER) picks up right where J.J. Abrams left off in THE FORCE AWAKENS, and frankly, we don’t need to know much more than that. New heroes, new planets, new adventures, crafted by one of the most respected filmmakers alive, and starring the intergenerational of our dreams. We can’t wait -- and with collectibles available with tickets from Mondo and Birth. Movies. Death., a special keepsake die-cut menu (while supplies last) stacked with items to satisfy scruffy nerf-herders of all appetites, an intergalactic ad-free preshow extravaganza, and lots of in-theater surprises… well, you’ve gotta see THE LAST JEDI at Alamo Drafthouse. Merchandise available only while supplies last, only with tickets to STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI, and only through Alamo Drafthouse locations, drafthouse.com, and the latest edition of the Alamo app for iOS and Android. Additional questions? Check out the FAQ below. What time are tickets going on sale? Sorry, we can’t tell you. Patience, young Jedis! How will ticket purchasing work online? When tickets go on sale nationwide, visitors to drafthouse.com and users of the Alamo Drafthouse app for iOS and Android will be prompted to enter a virtual line. Why are you doing a virtual line? Unprecedented demand for tickets to THE FORCE AWAKENS caused some hiccups (to put it lightly) across the internet. The virtual line system, which we tested last year for ROGUE ONE, is a buffer that should alleviate strain on drafthouse.com and allow as many people as possible to get tickets. So how’s the virtual line work? Your place in line will update as you move closer and closer to the front. While you’re waiting, you’ll be able to browse theaters and showtimes, and see previews of the current seating chart to plan which showtime is best for you. When you get to the front of the line, the website or mobile app will behave normally. At that point, just purchase your tickets as you normally would. How long will it take for me to get tickets online? Each Alamo Drafthouse market will have their own line, with access to each theater in that market. There’ll be one common line for both 3D and 2D formats. In some markets the numbers might seem high, but the more locations in your market, the more shows, and the more seats that’ll be available. We’ll get you tickets, promise. So when can I plan on joining the virtual line? The virtual line will start to form right as tickets go on sale. But when do tickets go on sale? See answer #1. How do I purchase Mondo and Birth.Movies.Death merchandise? Merchandise available only while supplies last, only with tickets to STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI, and only at Alamo Drafthouse box office locations, drafthouse.com, and the latest edition of the Alamo app for iOS and Android. I purchased my tickets without the merch, but I’d really like to get them now -- what should I do? Contact your theater as soon as possible via drafthouse.com/theaters -- include your ticket confirmation details and a phone number that’s best to reach you. Quantities may be limited as we get closer to the release, so the sooner you do this, the better. I finally got through and now there’s no tickets available for the date or time I wanted. It’s true, those first shows are highly in demand. Between now and the opening we may be able to open up more shows and more seats. Stay tuned. Can I book a private screening of STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI for my employees/family/friends? You sure can, but spots are filling up fast. Head over to drafthouse.com/venue-rental and reach out to our private and community events team. What if there’re problems with the site? If we see problems with site performance we’ll update you as soon as we can via our social media channels, particularly @drafthouse on Twitter.
