Blackalicious at Cornerstone

June 3, 8:30p.m. - 11:55p.m.

Blackalicious coming to Cornerstone on Sunday, June 3, 2018 Plus: Amerigo Gazaway In a hip-hop career that has stretched past a decade, Blackalicious has earned respect the old-fashioned way–rising through honesty, commitment, and artistry. Blackalicious is an American hip hop duo from Sacramento, California made up of rapper Gift of Gab (born Tim Parker) and DJ/producer Chief Xcel (born Xavier Mosley). They are noted for Gift of Gab’s often “tongue-twisting”, multisyllabic, complex rhymes and Chief Xcel’s “classic” beats. Like a few other West Coast rap acts, including the Pharcyde and Jurassic 5, Blackalicious has generally favored what hip-hoppers call the “positive tip”; in other words, its lyrics have often been spiritual and uplifting rather than violent or misogynous. Like a lot of experimental alternative rappers, Blackalicious can be quirky and eccentric; nonetheless, spirituality is a big part of the group’s music. Although Blackalicious wasn’t formed until the early ’90s, its members had known each other since the late ’80s. Founding members Gift of Gab (Timothy Parker) and Chief Xcel (Xavier Mosley) first met in Sacramento, CA, in 1987 when they were students at John F. Kennedy High School. Neither of them was originally from Sacramento; DJ/producer Xcel (who was going by DJ IceSki at the time) was a native of the San Francisco Bay Area, while rapper Gift of Gab was from Los Angeles’ suburban San Fernando Valley. The two went their separate ways after Gift of Gab (also known as Gabby T) graduated from Kennedy High in 1989, but they were reunited in Davis, CA, in 1992. By that time, Xcel had become a student at the University of California at Davis and the Gift of Gabhad moved to Davis to form Blackalicious with him. UC Davis was where Xcel had started working with a hip-hop crew named SoleSides, whose members included DJ Shadow, Lateef the Truth Speaker, and Lyrics Born. SoleSides Records was the name of the SoleSides Crew’s Northern California record company and in 1994, that label released Blackalicious’ debut single “Swan Lake.” Although not a triple-platinum smash, the single was a small underground hit that fared well among alternative rap audiences. The following year, SoleSides Records released a Blackalicious EP titled Melodica. By late 1997, SoleSides Records had transformed into Quannum Records, and in 1999, Quannum put out another Blackalicious EP, A2G. In 2000, Quannum released the group’s full-length debut Nia (whose title is the Swahili word for purpose). After being together eight years, Blackalicious finally signed with a major label when, in late 2000, the Californians were added by MCA. In April 2002, Quannum/MCA released Blazing Arrow, which boasted guest appearances ranging from vocalist Zack de la Rocha (of Rage Against the Machine) to the Roots’ ?uestlove to veteran soul singerGil Scott-Heron. After the requisite tour, both Xcel and Gab began developing solo material; Quannum released both Maroons’ Ambush (Chief Xcel with Latyrx’s Lateef the Truth Speaker) as well as a Gift of Gab solo LP, Fourth Dimensional Rocketships Going Up. The pair returned in 2005 for their third album, The Craft, with a contract in hand from the Anti- label. By Alex Henderson – All Music Guide. Aterciopelados at Cornerstone

June 5, 7:30p.m. - 11:55p.m.

Aterciopelados at Cornerstone on June 5th! Aterciopelados, the pioneer Latin-American folk-rock group, returns after 8 years with their first long and live project entitled "Reluciente, Rechinante y Aterciopelado." This CD+DVD is a compilation of the most representative songs of their repertoire that celebrates over two decades of their existence as a band. It features the participation of big names, such as Macaco, León Larregui (vocals for the Mexican group Zoé), Goyo (Chocquibtown) and Catalina García (Monsieur Periné). The group's members, Andrea Echeverri and Héctor Buitrago, founded Aterciopelados in 1992 and achieved great success, both locally and internationally, thanks to a sound that was absolutely unique and innovative, free of prejudices, mixing rock with the roots of Colombian folklore and even with salsa and bossa nova. Aterciopelados have grown and evolved with each production, making history in Latin America and the rest of the world. They have released seven studio and one compilation album, selling over ten million copies of their records. Their album Río has been mentioned by Rolling Stone magazine as one of the 10 best Latin rock albums of all times. They have earned two Latin Grammy awards and been nominated on multiple occasions for the Grammy. Aterciopelados are also Amnesty International ambassadors focusing on the fight against abuse of women and have been strong activists since the beginning of their journey as a group, as well as individually, with Andrea releasing three studio recordings ("Andrea Echeverri", "Dos" & "Ruiseñora") that reveal a very clear position regarding gender issues and the rights of women. The first one of said albums carries her name. Furthermore, Hector, who is composer and producer for many up and coming artists, has always been interested in the environment and the legacy from ancestral indigenous people, and has actively participated in organizing "Canto al Agua," an intercultural network focusing on healing and caring for the water. His soloist discography consists of his albums "Conector", "Conector II" and "Niños Cristal". Hector and Andrea are currently presenting "Reluciente, Rechinante y Aterciopelado", homage to all the songs that turned them into one of the greatest and most renowned rock bands in Colombia and worldwide. As a result of their getting together after a three-year recess and with the objective of presenting their greatest hits at the 20 years of Rock al Parque, they have created this CD+DVD. It includes songs that made the "50 most viral songs of Colombia" This is an album filled with environmental-friendly elements, and all related videos of the group are already available on the Vevo channel on Youtube and available on all streaming and online purchasing websites. It is a summary of the greatest hits of a legendary band that has left its imprint on more than one generation for over two decades. In the middle of their world tour “Reluciente, Rechinante 2017”, in which they support the release of the live album that bears this name in different countries in Europe, Aterciopelados’ pays tribute to Juan Gabriel, with its version of “He venido a pedirte Perdón”. According to Andrea and Héctor, this song is "Sound nu disco and plancha futurista", referring to the term 'iron music' that in Colombia encompasses the great songwriters of Latin music of the 70’s and 80’s. June 29, 7:30p.m. - 11:59p.m.

Chances are, if you are anywhere near the Detroit music scene, you’ve heard of the influential hip hop trio that makes up Slum Village. In 1991 the group changed their name to Slum Village recording their first album “Vol. 1”, in Dilla’s basement and RJ Rice Studios, it was critically acclaimed in the Detroit underground scene, later finding its way into the hands of A Tribe Called Quest’s own Q-Tip, who played it for some of hip hop’s elite, such as Busta Rhymes, Questlove, and D’angelo. And so, songwriter Mat Kerekes pursues the source of discontent that is ravaging his friends, his family, and his Rust Belt city of Toledo, Ohio with the band’s most dynamic record to date. On As You Please the epidemic is bigger than addiction and overdoses. There is no longer a Dream to be pursued for the friends and family surrounding Citizen. The band explores that absence and the misguided ways in which it gets filled. On opener “Jet” the kids move slow and there’s a stranger living in the narrator’s home. Both are Kerekes’ discreet way of expressing the wreckage of widespread opiate addiction. “In The Middle Of It All” might be Citizen at their most hopeful, but it also reads as agonizing expression of the ruin in the Heartland. As You Please also showcases the growing versatility of a band seven years deep and still restless. Citizen has fully outgrown the pop punk, but also refuses to brood in post-hardcore dirges. Written over the course of a year, the record is devoid of the brutish and sinister elements found on Everybody Is Going To Heaven. Here, Citizen go beyond the grunge to shoegaze contrasts and strive for something benevolent. There’s a spiritual core to the record that manifests in subtle ways like the ethereal vocals echoing in the breakdown of “Control,” the droning organs on “You Are A Star” or the almost operatic refrain on “In The Middle Of It All.” The finespun ways in which Citizen has written this record mark a cataclysmic breakthrough for the band. There is damage and disarray in the band member’s daily lives, but within this record all the pieces have been restored in an ornate arrangement befitting a stained glass mosaic. In the end, As You Please tries to give strength to those in need. There are illitic factors that control, but Citizen has written a guiding light of an album out of the debris. It concludes with “You Are A Star” and “Flowerchild;” one an unstable request of confidence set to soaring progressions, the other a blistering finale that subverts expectation. As You Please might read as meek, but it represents Citizen in its most confident and expansive state.
